Keeping the Faith, a booklet of reprints of a Sioux City Journal series originally published May 23-38, 2004 by John Quinlan, Journal Copy Editor and Staff Writer. 49 pages, wire bound. A Jewish presence has graced Sioux City for the greater part of the city's 150-year history. A couple of generations ago, there were more the 3,000 Jews attending several synagogues, and it seemed that Jewish names fronted half of the businesses in town. Times have changed. Ten years ago, the Conservative and Reformed synagogues consolidated as the Jewish population dwindled to maybe 300 souls. But the community remains . . . smaller but still strong. This series of stories examines the Jewish people of Sioux City, their history and experiences, how Congregation Beth Shalom came to be, what it means to be a Jew here today and what the future may bring.
